Businesses in Fiji to benefit from Southern Cross Cable Upgrade
Fiji’s businesses will benefit from an upgrade planned by the Southern Cross Cable Network, which will take place as early as January 2008.
Southern Cross Cable Limited plans an overhaul of their cable network with the intention to double current capacity levels so as to ensure an enhancement of the current services enjoyed by all our customers. This has a direct effect to Fiji as we are directly connected to the Southern Cable Network facilities.
Currently according to Southern Cross officials, each cable is equipped at 240 Gbps. The upgrade will increase each cable capacity in two stages, 330 Gbps by the first quarter of 2008 and 430 Gbps by the fourth quarter of 2008 making a total of 860 Gbps by the end of 2008 compared to 80 Gbps in 2001. The upgrade work involves the replacement of the transmission equipment located at each of the 10 cable stations; therefore, it will not affect or interrupt services currently enjoyed by our customers. In addition new equipments can deliver 400 Gbps per fiber pair; a tenfold increase to the equipment that will be replaced, according South Cross Network official.
This upgrade will support a wide range of transmission mechanisms including SONET and Gigabit Ethernet interfaces that are more suited to ISP’s with provision to extension of large broadband subscriber bases. Hence, data transmission point to point internationally from and to Fiji will be more convenient for multinational organizations that are currently in Fiji and those that are planning to set up in the future.
Southern Cross Cable Network provides the fastest, most direct, and most secure international bandwidth from Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii via the Pacific right to the heart of the Internet in the USA.
