FINTEL (and Fiji) today celebrated another key international communications milestone, landing the Southern Cross NEXT cable (SX NEXT) at FINTEL’s Vatuwaqa Communications Centre.
This USD$20M investment by FINTEL will expand Fiji’s global connectivity, as the current Southern Cross Cable retires in 2030.

Fijians increasingly need high capacity, low latency, dependable and secure networks to meet their online data needs, and FINTEL is committed to ensuring Fiji continues to be digitally equipped for 2030 and beyond.
Southern Cross NEXT project will provide an additional 72 terabits per second of capacity for Fijian customers, adding to the existing 20 terabits of capacity potential of the current Southern Cross systems.
Southern Cross Next will provide a reliable direct information pipeline to connect Fiji with Tokelau and Kiribati.
The cable will also provide greater options to the existing cables from Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga and New Caledonia (April 2022), connected to FINTEL/ Fiji.
SX Next will also land in Vanua Levu (Savusavu). For the first time in over a century, this will provide some resilience to Fiji’s international connectivity.
SX NEXT forms a third route in the Southern Cross cable eco-system connecting Fiji with key markets including New Zealand, Australia, and the United States.
Southern Cross currently provides the lowest latency links between Auckland and Los Angeles, and Sydney, and the addition of the SX NEXT route will further enhance the capability of these key routes for Fiji business and industry.
