Cable Systems
FINTEL serves as Fiji’s international gateway and a critical telecommunications hub in the South Pacific, hosting six major submarine cable systems at the Communications Centre in Vatuwaqa. These cable systems are:
Southern Cross Cable Network (SCCN) – commissioned in Fiji in 2001 the Southern Cross Cable System is the initial Data Cable System in Fiji. Spanning over 30,000km connecting Fiji to Australia, New Zealand and the United States. (https://www.southerncrosscables.com/)
Tonga Cable Network – commissioned in 2013 and spanning 827 kilometres, the Tonga Cable is the only Cable System connecting the Kingdom of Tonga to Fiji and the rest of the world. (https://www.tcc.to/)
Interchange Cable Network – commissioned in 2014, the ICN connects Fiji to Vanuatu spanning over 1,200 km. This cable system is the lifeline of connectivity to Vanuatu via Fiji and Australia through the Southern Cross Cable Network. (https://interchange.vu/)
Southern Cross NEXT Cable Network (SX-Next) – commissioned in 2021 as the next generation of SCCN cable communications, includes two spurs in Fiji—one on each of the country’s main islands. The SX-Next cable also provides indirect connectivity between Fiji and several regional countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Kiribati, Tokelau, and the United States.

Tui Samoa Cable System – commissioned in 2022. The Tui Samoa cable has two spurs in Fiji. One on each of Fiji’s main islands providing direct connectivity between Fiji, Wallis & Futuna and Samoa. providing connectivity to Wallis & Futuna and Samoa. Through the Tui Samoa cable FINTEL can also provide indirect connectivity to American Samoa, Niue, the Cook Islands and French Polynesia. (https://www.ssccsamoa.com/)
Gondwana 2 Cable System – Commissioned in 2022, the Gondwana 2 cable adds a layer of redundancy to New Caledonia’s existing Gondwana 1 system. It also provides indirect connectivity to Australia and the United States through FINTEL and the Southern Cross Cable Network. (https://office.opt.nc/en)
Google Bulikula and Tabua Cable Systems – Commissioned in 2025 as part of the Pacific Connect Initiative. The Bulikula Cable system provides connectivity to Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, French Polynesia and Hawaii (USA). The Tabua Cable systems expands this connectivity between Australia, Fiji and the United States.

By hosting a diverse range of submarine cables, FINTEL plays a vital role in enhancing digital connectivity across the Pacific. The convergence of multiple cable systems at a single, secure landing site allows for efficient traffic routing, disaster recovery options, and increased bandwidth availability. This setup not only strengthens Fiji’s position as a telecommunications hub but also supports broader regional development by enabling improved internet access, cloud services, and digital transformation for neighbouring island nations. FINTEL’s management of these cable systems underscores its commitment to building a resilient and inclusive digital ecosystem in the Pacific.

Satellite Earth Stations
To complement our cable routes, FINTEL employs a Standard A Earth Station at its Vatuwaqa Communications Centre (VCC) with the antenna pointing to the NSS-9 Satellite orbiting above the Pacific Ocean Region at 183 degrees East.
Services offered are VSAT solutions (Internet and voice) to the Pacific Islands and the domestic market
FINTEL uses the ViaSat Linkstar DVB-S system, an IP Based technology offering high quality and economic advantages.

Switch
FINTEL is using Fiji’s first International Next Generation Network (NGN) Gateway Switch. This single and flexible next-generation voice network (softswitch), not only brings about cost effectiveness and efficiency, but enables the creation of new value-added services to FINTEL customers. This technology interconnects FINTEL with domestic and international bilateral partners and provides choice of traditional TDM (Time Division Multiplex) and IP (Internet Protocol) telecommunications services.
With the NGN, the Voice over Broadband (VoBB) market is now a reality for Fiji’s consumers. VoBB is the delivery of voice services over high speed broadband data lines.
